Lars Furenlid, PhD, is a tenured Professor at the University of Arizona with appointments in the Department of Medical Imaging, the College of Optical Sciences, and Biomedical Engineering, and he is also a member of the Arizona Cancer Center. A physical chemist and physicist with 30 years of experience, he specializes in molecular imaging and the development of advanced instrumentation for x-ray and gamma-ray imaging, spectroscopy, and related biomedical applications. Dr. Furenlid is the founding Director and Contact Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Center for Gamma-ray Imaging (CGRI), leading projects since its inception in 1999. His research, supported by federal and industry grants, focuses on developing novel detectors and imaging systems such as SPECT, PET, and CT, with expertise in optics, electronics, and data reconstruction. In addition to mentoring graduate students, he teaches courses in imaging physics, spectroscopy, and radiochemistry, and co-chairs the NIH SBMIT(10) study section, which reviews biomedical imaging proposals.
